Compression programs
7-zip is a good free alternative to winzip (which is shareware and more popular) and offers better compression. 7-zip is distributed under the GNU LGPL. There is also a 7z format for compression which is quite good. The installer can be downloaded from www.7-zip.org
Gzip or GNUzip is an open source program. Gzip compressed files are very common in GNU projects. Files compressed with gzip usually have .gz extension. The installer can be downloaded from www.gzip.org
Camunzip is available free for personal use and can be downloaded from www.camunzip.com
Zipgenius is also a free compression software for zip format and also other formats like ace, rar, cab etc.It can be downloaded from www.zipgenius.it
